Ewan Pearson
Saturday 13 February | 10:00 PM | The Civic Underground
UK DJ/production maestro Ewan Pearson will play a Playground Weekender sideshow where he will apparently command the decks for five hours. Pearson’s return to Australia coincides with the release of his third commercial mix CD, his first for seminal Cologne label Kompakt, We are Proud of our Choices, which traverses material from Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Bot'Ox and Ivan Smagghe. Pearson has released previously on the hallowed imprint under the Partial Arts moniker with Al Usher, and this should cement his status as one of the Kompakt cognoscenti. The mix’s title references an old Montreal socialist song that Pearson came across in a book by G.A. Cohen. One would expect nothing less from the erudite tastemaker, who co-authored the book Discographies: Dance, Music, Culture and the Politics of Sound in the mid-90s. Chris H

Orbital are recognised for a slew of acclaimed cuts, including ‘Halcyon’, 'Belfast' and 'Chime', and have established themselves alongside the likes of Underworld as one of world’s elite live dance acts, with Paul affirming, “Audience reaction is part of the process… It really becomes like a friendly football match between you and the crowd. That was always one of our strong points - and for people to say that about an electronic band is a real honor, because it’s the one genre of music that’s normally crap live.”
